Art Speigelman has called comix the "bastard child of art and commerce" and this is nowhere more in evidence than in this week's New Yorker, the annual Cartoon Issue featuring a Robert Crumb cover, tons of gag cartoons, and an essay on Peanuts by Jonathan Franzen. But the highlight of the issue for comic literates is four pages of beautiful full-colour autobio strips by Seth, disguised as an ad for Johnnie Walker scotch. Booze isn't mentioned, but crackers and Little Lulu receive full coverage.
