Hello everyone,
Sorry for being late issuing this announcement since a few computer graphics professors sucked out all the energies of your high priestess these past few weeks. So this is it. The next comixjam will be held tomorrow on October 31 from 1PM to 6 PM at the Casa del Popolo, corner St-Laurent and a little bit south of St-Joseph. If you can, come with a costume or weird make up and let celebrate Halloween (or Samhain for the pagans among us) by drawing strange and horrific things.

Voilà je voudrais vous informer que le prochain Jam aura lieu à la Casa del Popolo (coin St-Laurent et juste un peu au sud de St-Joseph) de 1PM à 6PM. Rocking Raven : Seoul to New York to Angouleme

 Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas has been on the wing a lot as of late, enjoyig considerable attention as the creator of the sub genre of Hida Manga. Here's his latest update from RockingRaven.com
My body is back from Korea but my head is still swimming home-jet lug lug lug- hence the midnight email-
The trip was an intense week filled with dinners with the City Mayor and a host of senior managers of Korea's cartoon and animation industries. I had my first experience with fans. They had lined up for an hour just for an autograph- school children, mothers with babies even an old man who turned out to be somewhat of a cultural treasure, a cartoonist whose hands are cast in bronze at the Institute. 55,000 Koreans walked through the exhibit in three days but only after the military brass band had finished a rather lengthy but sparky set of tunes.
What was most remarkable was realizing that in Korea and perhaps in Asia a cartoonist is a member of a respected profession and as such there is an expectation that we dont over indulge in the fermented rice whiskey or ever pass on the Kimcii. I am happy to report I did neither.
Back only 4 days and i was invited by the French consulate to participate in their manga/bande D contribution to the Writers Festival. I believe that I have received a second serious option to illustrate a book, one in Korean and one in French. Where are the English? Mon Dieu just when the Indians finally want an Englishman they've all buggered off.
Anyway after the good reception by the French hosts- Vancouver's Sophia Books and the Consulate I came home and booked my hotel room for January at the comic book fair in Angouleme, France.
And just in case my head gets to close to my body I'm off with a plane load of Haidas to New York this weekend to sing at an opening at the Museum of Natural History. It is my intention to slip in either Jimmy Durante's theme song or a cheeky Aria from Don Giovanni amidst the drum beats and carrying on of our national Haida incantations.

This exhibition includes about 20 draughtsmen mostly from Geneva and Zurich, who express themselves through creating animated movies and comics. The main feature is the diversity of styles, originality and technique. Some already enjoy significant popularity: Schwitzgebel, Luyet, Tirabosco, Wazem.
This exhibition has already been shown in the Alliances Françaises of Vancouver (pilot of this event) and Calgary, thanks to a collaboration between the Consulate-general of Switzerland and the Alliance françaises in Canada. This exhibition is presented at the occasion of the fourth international comic strip meeting of Gatineau. The exhibition will move to Toronto in December for it's last canadain showing this year.

Our friend Frédérik Langlois, heureux propriétaire du F52, sends me this link for a write up his shop just got in La Presse a few days ago [googled page]. It spotlights the re-launching of the shop [Frédérik took over from the previous owners this summer] And the dedication of the shops walls to the new gallery aspect of the shop mandate. Already about to open their second show [the first I’m told went very well with a fair number of pieces selling], ECHES: Portraits du pire de Matthieu Henman. The Verniessage will be held Friday October 22nd, starting at 5pm. The show runs from now till the 30th of Nov.

Spiegelman will be interviewed by Canadian graphic novelist Seth, and the two will be discussing Spiegelman’s new work, IN THE SHADOW OF NO TOWERS. 10th issue of Montreal’s Fish Piss Magazine launched Thursday, October 14th, at Pharmacie Esperanza

Fish Piss will be launched Thursday, October 14th, at Pharmacie Esperanza (12 St. Viateur W., corner St. Laurent), from six P.M. to midnight.
The launch is free admission, with special guest DJs spinning 45s all night. This issue features long interviews with Amon Tobin, Kid Koala, Sixtoo, Joey Shithead, Mick Collins of the Dirtbombs and Les Georges Leningrad.

 Toronto comix hipster Sean Ward's website is finally finished in it's complete form. I'll let Sean give the tour...
There has been much construction going on over the past few days over at www.seanward.net! The site is now, finally, fully operational. Let me tell you about what's new!
The first thing you'll notice is that the front splash page has been beautified with flashy things, lots of color, and a dancing girl. Move your mouse around, there's lots to click!
The SHOPPE is finally open! Now you can order copies of The Sean Ward Electric Comics Freak-Out!, T-Shirts, and other fun stuff from all over the world.
The SEAN section is launched with several new features. The PHOTO ALBUM will be a rapidly growing part of the site where we take you along on some of our adventures. The MEDIA page is home to sound and video clips to download. The JOURNAL, a favorite from the old site, is back and better than ever. And my favorite is the all new MAILBAG, a new weekly feature where I respond to letters and e-mails sent in by readers and visitors to the site.

Expozine 2004, Montreal's 3rd annual small press, comic, and zine fair is set to take place on Sunday nov 28th, 11am – 6pm [doors open at ten for exhibitors] Station C, 1450 Ste. Catherine St. E [Beaudry Metro]
Tables are going for 10$, a deal! call Billy at 514 278 4879 to book a spot.
Last year the event was healed at a larger space than the first, and was a big sucsees.
I’ll be there myself with my book revolver and I think I’ll try to find some time to put together another jam zine finally for the event [I’m nearly a year over due now I think]. And i know the whole Montreal small press community is planning to go if they can, so bet on a smorgasbord of comics, books, art, everything.
I’m a bit sad that it’s not going to be in the 500A MONT-ROYAL E location, that space as you can see from my photo story was really very bright and cheerful, and even when it was packed it never got uncomfortable.
But I’m assured by event organizers that the new location is even bigger and better! The neighbourhood is great – lots of restaurants and shops in the area, and one of the most exuberant nightlife areas in town, right next to the Montreal downtown core, which is also always hopping.
You can make a whole day of it with your friends!
So get those zines printed, dolls stuffed, pins punched, and nicks naked and reserve your spot. 120 exhibiters are expected and thousands showed up over the course of the day and the event attracted plenty of out-of-towners last year.

Graphic novels are forcing their way into the literary main stream, and Canadian artists are leading the charge

An article in this week's issue of the Canadian news weekly Maclean's spotlights Drawn & Quarterly, Chester Brown, Adrian Tomine and Seth in a feature story about the health of the comics market and speculates on the impact of so many popular literary graphic novels. The future looks bright it seems.
"Oliveros is right, then, about the quality of work on offer. So will graphic novels take a permanent place beside other literary genres in North America, as they always have in Europe and Japan? Most signs are positive. Media attention is constant and sales are good; Louis Riel is in its third printing. The success of veterans like Seth and Brown, and of D&Q itself, has inspired younger artists. Tomine, 30, says he "always had a kind of fantasy about writing for D&Q," which was founded when he was 15. And Tomine, whose subtle drawings of contemporary urban angst brought a lineup of fans to his Toronto reading, is a role model for even younger artists. For the past 18 months, notes Oliveros, he's been able to get his better works into bookstores, even if some shops stick them in the sci-fi section. If graphic novels are still there in two years, when Clyde Fans Book 2 is expected, it may mean that their time has finally come."

 Time Magazine Canada and Time.com feature a two-page original comic strip by D+Q cartoonist Kevin Huizenga, who this past weekend at SPX (Small Press Expo) in Bethesda, MD took home the Ignatz Award for "Outstanding Story" for his GLENN GANGES story in the DRAWN & QUARTERLY SHOWCASE: BOOK ONE. In addition, D+Q has just published Kevin's first issue of his new comic book series OR ELSE.

Un projet BD sur la liberté de presse pour « L'Aut'Journal »
Simon Banville - dont on a parlé dans La Presse il y a quelques semaines - propose l'expérience suivante aux auteurs de BD :
« J'organise un « spécial bande dessinée » dans le journal mensuel l'Aut'journal. Les auteurs se partageraient deux pages de 11 pouces par 15 pouces en couleur dans les pages centrales du journal pour le numéro Décembre-Janvier. Les auteurs doivent s'inspirer d'un sujet : la liberté de presse. La bande dessinée doit être remise dans un format qui convient à un certain standard de la publications dans les journaux en raison des contraintes de la mise page. Les caricatures sont la bienvenue mais les histoires « à suivre » ne peuvent être acceptées. La participation est bénévole. Voici l'échéancier :
Samedi 23 octobre : Première réunion des auteurs (Pour les auteurs de Montréal)
Samedi 30 octobre : Remise des croquis ou des textes.
Mercredi le 15 novembre : date de tombée : remise des bande dessinée.
Cette expérience de publication peut être bénéfique pour tous bédéistes qui veulent tenter leur chance dans une publication journalistique. L'aut'journal est publié à 35 000 copies à travers le Québec. L'expérience pourrait aussi être répétée pour les prochains mois si l'enthousiasme des bédéistes y est. Guy's got a review up at The Cultural Gutter, of creatively vaclempt but slick and prolific, Adrian Tomine's Scrapbook: Uncollected work: 1990 2004. Though he's been stuck in a bit of a self-proclaimed rut in terms of development [time to toss the rulers and computers colours Adrian! Get you hands dirty and make a mess for a bit!] he's been putting out a string of successful and stylish books. This latest is a sampling of work spanning his career to date, and features the work that initially put him on the map in Pulse! Magazine [Tower Records]

Adrian Tomine in one word? Clean. His unofficial uniform is pressed khakis and an oxford shirt, hair fastidiously parted, black-framed glasses polished to a glow. Clean, too, is his top-selling comic series, Optic Nerve. Not that he doesn't curse; his comic is full of four-letter invectives and frank sex-talk. But filtered by the machine-washed colour palette, the careful rulering, the pinpoint line, it's more like incidental punctuation spilling from his cast of beautiful young alt-beatniks.

Toronto Sequential Art Fest Supports Literacy
A group of Toronto-based illustrators has organized a grassroots literacy drive in the form of the "Sequential Art Festival". There are three events in October at various locations in the city. The events serve as a "show and tell about the making of cartoons, comics, animation and film by cartoonists, comic book artists, writers, animators, collectors, producers and distributors." The project's goal is to help praise the awareness, profile and funds for adult literacy programming. I'll [tony] be a presenter for two of the events, sharing the story of my Rat Boy comic book exploits (Event 1) and flash animation chops (Event 2). More information is available here.

NATIONAL POST: He's back!: He's an RCMP officer by day and a superhero the rest of the time! Brandon boy revives '70s comic book with Captain Canuck
When creating a superhero, few comic-book writers allow the words "RCMP" and "Moose Jaw" to creep into their thoughts, let alone onto the page. But for Riel Langlois, the force behind Captain Canuck: Unholy War, such Canadianisms are integral to the creative process.
Langlois's three-part series -- a revamped version of the original 1975 Captain Canuck by Richard Comely -- hit stores this week, after two years in the making. And there was so much buzz among those in the comic-book know, some copies never even made it to the rack.
"I put one aside for myself as soon as the order came in to make sure I got one," said Toby Orr of Silver Snail Comics on Toronto's trendy Queen Street West. "There's been some buzz about it for awhile -- I had a couple of friends actually call me at work and ask, 'Is it true there's another Captain Canuck coming out?'

Two of North America's more successful cartoonists have showcased Edmonton to the world for years. Gary Delainey and Gerry Rasmussen are the creative duo behind the popular international comic strip, Betty. Seen in more than 100 newspapers around the globe, the comic strip's artwork frequently features local colour like West Edmonton Mall, Whyte Avenue or Oilers jerseys. Since both Rasmussen and Delainey were born and bred and still reside in Edmonton, that's not so surprising. But what is amazing is that our local colour seems to play well in other countries as diverse as Denmark and Pakistan.

Seulement que 25 dodos avant le Rendez-vous international de la BD de Gatineau. C'est mercredi 29 septembre que seront dévoilés les cinq auteurs européens et les cinq auteurs québécois invités en 2004. Le site du SLO a été mis à jour et offre une rétrospective des événements passés. On pourra constater que l'organisation a toujours réservé aux amateurs, au cours des ans, de très agréables surprises, comme Sandrine Revel (Drôle d'ange gardien), Francis Carin (Victor Sackville), Patrice Pellerin (L'épervier), Michel Weyland (Aria), Luc Jacamon (Le tueur), Jérôme Lereculey (Arthur), Griffo (Vlad), Marc Bourgne (Barbe-Rouge), Émile Bravo (Jules), Christophe Chabouté, Lax (Le Choucas), Lucien De Gieter (Papyrus), Nicolas Dumontheuil et Roger Winderlocher (Nabuchodinausore). Tous des invités sympathiques, généreux et qui en étaient souvent à leur première visite au Québec. Également, tous les auteurs importants du Québec y sont passés, ou presque. Qui seront les invités cette année ?

"Té malade, toi!" La BD de Line Gamache
Premier long récit en bande dessinée de Line Gamache, "Té malade, toi!" raconte l'histoire de Josée, la petite soeur de l'auteure. Une petite soeur bien spéciale née dans les années '60 avec un handicap intellectuel. Nous découvrons à travers les yeux de l'auteure, la personnalité originale et attachante de cette enfant pas tout à fait comme les autres. Line Gamache puise dans ses souvenirs pour nous raconter les bouleversements survenus dans sa famille. On se doute bien que la présence de Josée en a modifié le quotidien. Cette famille a, bien malgré elle, vécu des aventures quelque peu rocambolesques, où le comique côtoie à l'occasion le tragique. Line Gamache évolue dans le milieu des arts visuels depuis 1989, année où elle termine son bac à l'université Concordia. Elle est aussi connue comme peintre, sculpteure et « patenteuse de l'art ».Cette bande dessinée sera lancée le samedi 2 octobre 2004, lors d'un 5 à 7au Cheval Blanc809 Ontario Est.Info : sirlin7@cam.org
