CBC | Cronenberg's latest explores nature of violence
Permalink
The film is an adaptation of a DC Comics noir crime graphic novel of the same name by John Wagner and Vince Locke. It tells the story of a simple family man who becomes a national hero after he kills two wanted criminals who attempt to rob his diner. However, his new-found celebrity attracts two mobsters who believe him to be a former hitman colleague who disappeared decades earlier.

Cronenberg said the film examines the nature of violence "on families, human life and human bodies," and that the level of violence included was necessary to be true to the "film itself." But he also expressed doubt that seeing the on-screen killings would in turn inspire the audience to kill, arguing that if this were the case, the world would be "depopulated."
