BY GUY LESHINSKI

When Peter Birkemoe, co-founder and co-owner of The Beguiling, created the first Toronto Comic Arts Festival back in 2003, he knew he was onto something.

"This festival could, within five or six years, become one of the top two or three comic events in North America," he says, "given Toronto, the size of the comics community, the people we have here, the arts funding...."

That's what happens when you open the world of alternative comics to an awakened public. About 600 readers in 2003 braved the spotty weather and threat of SARS to stroll the festival grounds in Mirvish Village. They crowded panels and signings and basked in the heat of a comics craze that had sparked a mere year or two before.
