Christopher Butcher on Comics & Licensing "Adam Fortier went from being employed by a studio/publisher named Dreamwave, who made their fortunes on licensed books, to being a paid consultant for other studios/publishers that do licensed material (including Devil's Due Productions), thereby ameliorating his risk. When Adam Fortier decided to found his own publishing start-up, Speakeasy Publishing, I think it's important to note that licensing (as we think about it) doesn't really enter into his publishing plan..."

Why this Man Cannot Earn Frequent Flier Points Permalink
Shahid Mahmood Update In May 2004, Ottawa cartoonist Shahid Mahmood was mysteriously denied a seat on a cross-country flight. Since then, he's been writing the occasional update on his quest to find out why for the Toronto Star:
"Earlier this year I gave a radio interview about my circumstances on CBC Radio. Immediately after, I was contacted by Lapierre's assistant, whosaid he had classified information that would help clarify matters for me. Upon meeting him, I was subtly told to 'back off.' Instead of being told anything helpful, I was asked what my political leanings were as a syndicated political cartoonist. I was also told that all attempts to get any type of answer would be stonewalled by the ministry of transportation. Moreover, I was warned that the more media interviews I gave about the case, the 'thicker and thicker' my file would get."

Everyone's a Critic Permalink
Mike Constable Backlash Ottawa Citizen columnist Janice Kennedy weighs in with her response to the controversy over Mike Constable's cartoon of the new Pope. Reprinted at rabble.ca:
"Never mind that the thing is actually a clever swipe at a perfectly valid target, the former Cardinal Ratzinger's indisputably authoritarian impulses — and at the Church's, too, under his and the late John Paul's rigid direction. And while the more literal-minded might see the Nazi salute solely as a malicious and misinformed commentary on the Pope's personal history, many others understand it for the edgy observation it really is. Like it or not, “Nazi” has become culturally synonymous with tyranny in all kinds of arenas — remember Seinfeld's “Soup Nazi?” — so if the shoe fits ... "

O'Malley in Halifax Permalink
Plum Deal Inspired by a classic Plumtree song, artist Bryan Lee O’Malley has turned Scott Pilgrim into a multimedia empire — with a six-book comic series and a film in the works — in less than a thousand years. by Jon Bruhm
"Success is in the eye of the beholder, but most of those who are in search of fame and fortune usually end up in bigger cities. The opposite is at least semi-true with graphic and recording artist Bryan Lee O’Malley. The 26-year-old grew up in London, Ontario and eventually relocated to Toronto. However, with a red-hot comic series and a Best Emerging Talent win at last month’s Toronto Comic Arts Festival, O’Malley has done something entirely unexpected: He, along with his wife, moved to Halifax in April."

Bart Beatty on TCAF and Dutch cartoonist Stefan van Dinther: "Tobias Schalken and Stefan van Dinther, the Dutch duo responsible for Eiland, had a day to kill in a new city while recuperating from jetlag. Finding downtown Toronto reasonably dull (it is, as they say, New York run by the Swiss), they ventured into the subway system and chose to get off at a randomly chosen station to see what would be there. In this spirit of adventure, they chose Don Mills -- thinking (erroneously) that there would be mills there. Instead they found themselves in one of Toronto's most boring suburbs, surrounded by retirement condos and golf courses."

Seth added to Museum Collection Permalink
CBC: Warhol, Rothko, Seth: Canadian cartoonist added to AGO
The Toronto-based Art Gallery of Ontario announced Wednesday that it is adding a large-scale pen-and-ink drawing by acclaimed Canadian cartoonist Seth to its contemporary art collection.
Hush, which depicts a number of nighttime vignettes of lonely Canadian settings, is an important purchase that recognizes the comic "as a fully articulated art form on its own terms," the gallery said in a statement.
"This work by Seth was acquired as a work of art and not an example of popular culture," said Ben Portis, the gallery's assistant curator of contemporary art. "What makes Hush the right work for the gallery is the degree to which it converses with depictions of the Canadian landscape in the AGO collection, from Tom Thomson to today."
An exhibit of Seth's work is also to be held at the AGO, June 29-October 16. On Thursday, June 30, 2005, 7 pm AGO curator Ben Portis will interview Seth about his work.

Stats Can numbers for Periodical publishing on the rise Permalink
Co: Olivier Charbonneau
Canadian publishers are pumping out more periodicals than ever before and pulling in far greater revenues, according to new data from the Periodical Publishing Survey, which paints a positive portrait of the industry.
Between 1993 and 2003, the periodical publishing industry showed steady gains in the number of magazines, total revenue and circulation.
Industry revenues hit nearly $1.6 billion in 2003, up 22.5% from 1998 and a 56.5% increase from 1993. During the 10-year period, the industry's profit margin rose from 5.0% of revenues to 9.7%.
Magazine publishing activity has increased steadily since 1993 when 1,256 publishers produced 1,678 titles with a total annual circulation of 575 million copies.
Ten years later, 1,633 publishers produced 2,383 periodicals and sold nearly 778 million copies. This 42% increase in the numbers of titles had a positive impact on total revenues. more here -->>

Michel Rabagliati in Macleans Permalink
Profile by DEREK CHEZZI "The new volume is a tightly scripted story about protagonist Paul's budding romance with soon-to-be girlfriend Lucie as they meet in art college and eventually move into an apartment together. The rich, emotionally moving narrative has more in common with slice-of-life films like Garden State than such comics-turned-megahit movies as X-Men. "I tried to do fiction with characters that I didn't know, detective stories and things like that, but it didn't fit me," Rabaligati says in a thick Quebecois accent. "If it wouldn't be about real life, I wouldn't do it. I would prefer continuing in commercial illustration."...."

CONUNDRUM PRESS AND COACH HOUSE BOOKS PRESENT AN EVENING OF COMICS AND ROMANCE Permalink
Co:THE MONTHLY MONTRÉAL COMIX JAM
Round up your sweethearts and enemies and join GOLDA FRIED and MARC NGUI as they launch their new books at PHARMACIE ESPERANZA (5490 Saint-Laurent) on JUNE 21 at 7 P.M.
Golda Fried will read sections of her new novel, NELLCOTT IS MY DARLING, while Marc Ngui will perform his Œdub trance operetta' version of THE UNEXPURGATED TALE OF LORDIE JONES, complete with slides, sampler and music by The Defence. The event is free and will be followed by a DJ LOUNGE after party.
ABOUT NELLCOTT IS MY DARLING:
It's 1991, and nineteen-year-old Alice has never had a boyfriend, doesn't know how to do laundry and has just started her first year at McGill. She joins the Film Society and meets Rally, a hip events coordinator who invites her to a party where she spots Nellcott Ragland, a 23-year-old guitar-playing, black eye-makeup-wearing record store employee. Their budding romance, made up of meetings with parents, cold nights in unheated apartments and visits to record stores, evolves within the frame of the turbulent undergraduate comings-of-age going on around them. Honest and compelling, Nellcott Is My Darling shines a light on freshman relationships in flux and the way lives can so easily become hitched and unhitched without warning.
PRAISE FOR NELLCOTT IS MY DARLING:
ŒA sensitive, sensual, funny and accurate map of the rocky and mystifying territory between childhood and maturity. - The Globe and Mail
GOLDA FRIED grew up in Toronto and then went to university in Montreal, where she wrote poetry and was involved in spoken-word events such as the one at the Lollapalooza rock festival in 1994. Her collection of stories, Darkness Then a Blown Kiss, came out in 1998 and was named one of the ten best books of the year by NOW magazine. She teaches freshman composition in Greensboro, North Carolina.
ABOUT THE UNEXPURGATED TALE OF LORDIE JONES:
What happens when you try to double-cross the tooth fairy? Marc Ngui's follow-up to the critically acclaimed Enter Avariz answers this question with an intricately crosshatched cartoon conflation of several popular childhood fears and a morally ambiguous suburban fable. Taunted in the schoolyard, Lordie Jones slowly realizes something is wrong inside him, a secret that continues to grow. Told with wicked delight and dark humour in the tradition of Roald Dahl, Edward Gorey, and Tim Burton, Toronto native Marc Ngui has created a graphic novel with all the ghoulish verve of a classic unexpurgated fairytale.
PRAISE FOR LORDIE:
" Neither confessional nor ironic, Ngui's work is wonderfully out of step with trends and can sometimes read like a comic collaboratively created by Terry Gilliam and Naomi Klein." - eye magazine
MARC NGUI is a graphic novelist and artist whose work is firmly rooted in diy/zine culture. For the past two years, he¹s given workshops and presentations at libraries, schools, bookstores and art galleries about the rapidly evolving North American Culture of Comix. He spent the 2004200 season as Toronto diy arts correspondent for ZeD Television on the cbc, and is currently interacting processing in Toronto.

Pope Cartoon Redux Permalink
Editor Defends Constable Cartoon (BM) Sharon Fraser, the editor of rabble.ca, responds to criticisms of Mike Constable's cartoon of the new Pope giving a Nazi salute to a religious icon . The cartoon was featured in the Ottawa Citizen in a profile of Constable and publisher Judy Rebick. Consequently, Catholic activists and conservatives in general have been bombarding the site with mail.
Fraser notes:
"Many of them seemed to suggest that one small — fairly benign — cartoon about the Pope was going to bring down the poor beleaguered Catholic Church. Come on, you people, I wanted to say. The Catholic Church is a massive, rich, powerful institution made up of billions of people around the world. How were my whiny letter-writers managing to make themselves sound like victims?"

Darwyn Cooke Wins Reuben Permalink
Comic Book Category Winner (BM) Canadian cartoonist Darwyn Cooke was announced as the winner of the 2004 Reuben Award for comic books. The awards were handed out in a ceremony at the National Cartoonists Society gathering in Scottsdale, Ariz. on May 28. Cooke won for his comic book miniseries/graphic novel The New Frontier.
The Reubens are awarded annually by the NCS. The main award, Cartoonist of the Year, is a small statuette designed in 1954 by former Society president Rube Goldberg (1883-1970 --Goldberg won his own award in 1967 as well as winning a Pulitzer in 1948). Cooke's award takes a different form, as indicated by this description from the Reubens press release: "Cartoonists in various professional divisions were also honored with special plaques for excellence. These awards are voted on by a combination of the general membership (by secret ballot) and special juries overseen by various NCS Regional Chapters."
Cooke and his book have also been nominated for several other U.S. awards this year, including an Eisner and a Harvey Award.
