Yours truly, looking very round from this angle and decked out in my Sunday best at EXPOZINE 04'. Have i mentioned i like a good tie?
I shared a table with Amanda Crawford [seen above] and a mini maker who had small stylized art comics and silk screen posters. I forgot to note his name down, or really do any of the collecting of info, cards and whatnot [also forgot to bring my own buisness cards, my bad], so unfortunately I made poor use of the events networking possibilities. Nor was i able to afford to buy or swap much, as i had to pinch from paul to pay the printer this time.
Took lots of photos of the show though, some seen here, & which I will mostly not add notes too this time, just dont have the time. Sorry folks. But I will say, the show was an overall bonafide success!! ****
There were some problems; The space was mighty dark for example - the flash shots here and the wonders of photshop make it look cool, but it was hard to see much of anything in same parts of the room. The balcony area went totally unused because it had no visible lighting at all. Bit of an oversight that will have to be looked after if this remains the location for future Expos. I personally also missed the more easily accessed, and frequently trafficked location of last years event. I'm told the people who manage that space refused to let the Expo happen in that hall again for some reason. That's a shame, unfortunately station "C", a night club and performance space at the very end of the main drag of the ghetto, in the shadow of the bridge that serves as a boundary marker for hochelaga & the ghetto, is a place where there just aren't many people on a rainy Sunday in November. It was not, as advertised, more downtown. It could work in the summer time possibly, that area is much more alive then. But despite all that, it was a great show! Big turnout in the afternoon, and behind the tables was the whole local scene, English and French. Plus lots of folks form down the 401 and over the 49th up as well, all displaying our wares in an fun and freindly underground market atmosphere - good vibes i think all round where i sat. Didn't see the moms with kids browsing like last years but lots of collectors of zines and nick naks, and otherwise interested and informed, + lots and lots of students. Montreal is a university town, 4 of them, along with a lot of collages and cgepts. So the youth contingent is always strong here. I sold a good number of my book RevolveR, as well as prints, and jam zines. Every one seemed to do ok, especially in the last 4 hours of the show after the browsers had had some time to come to terms with their wants and needs, and the late comers rushed in to snatch up a few cool doodads and new additions to bathroom libraries. I met some really cool folks from Toronto, like shannon gerard for one, who's posted her own report here on her site. And ended the night off pigging out on sushi with sherwin. I just found this, the folks at ahadada books have posted a music video presentation of the event here on their site. max |
