"...After standing around dripping in back of the church for half an hour, the other baptizees and I changed back into our dry church clothes, shivering, and stood in a line like graduates in front of the congregation.

We were each given a single red rose (my Becoming-a-Woman present, I told myself) and bid to wait for the pastor and Dick Powers to congratulate us.

Dick Powers was shaking my hand. I could see individual black whiskers on the side of his face. Then he leaned over asked quietly, "May I kiss you?..."
