my trial by fire
Book One Some wobbly bits to be sure, I was still finding my sea legs at this point, working out how to draw the characters. But I was pretty happy with this book. Some of the latter pages, 12 & 13 especially, were not quite what I was hoping for. I was just discovering that my habit of doing a lot of cross-hatching at the time was proving to not be the fastest way of doing things. It took me a long time to learn the self-control that it takes to pull back from habitual overworking of the art. Also one thing I almost immediately wished I had done differently when i saw it in print was the severed tentacle in the last panel...I really should have drawn the end of it so it's clear that it's been cut off, it would have made more sense and been a better composition as well. But I was sensitised to the CCA's guidelines but the editor and was thinking that it wouldn't be allowed [gore] so I drew it the way you see it here. |
