So this is Book 2. Things started really going sideways about half way through this issue. I had begun to fall behind and was in danger of blowing the deadline for one thing. By the end of this issue I suggested to the editor that I may not be able to keep a monthly schedule yet [ I was 22 and had a lot to learn yet still and knew it - I would have left at that point simply glad for the opportunity to try ]- unfortunately Marc [my editor] was 'completely confident' in me and insisted that it would be alright, he would just 'adjust the schedule' ...

Backing up a little, you'll notice to the right here there are two versions of page 1. The story behind that is why I felt a knot in my stomach when he said the above.

Half way through this issue I was called up by Marc and asked to redo the first page. I was already late so this was not something I really wanted to do. I asked why he wanted it redrawn. He told me at the time that HE though it should be cus it looked like...
'the story is about the bricks'.
I looked at the phone baffled for a moment and asked 'what bricks...the ones lining the man whole?'.

Yep.

Words were had and I refused to waste my time on this.

Latter I was called by Elaine Lee and asked why I was making so much trouble. Apparently word of my decent had made it's way all the way to Clive, and no one understood why i was being so difficult! I told her what Marc told me, and she was as stunned as I was, as well as amused if i recall. Had a much better sence of humour about the situation than I did at the time.

'I asked for the changes max, it wasn't his idea. And it's got nothing to do with the bricks. I tried laying out the dialog for that page and there's not enough room for it.'

She was right, and with that GOOD reason in hand I redrew it in the end. And, neither of us trusted anything Marc said again I think.

There a few little things I'd have liked to have redrawn on this book that weren't due to lack of time. The detectives hat on pages 5 & 12 looked retarded and I always look at page 20 and think 'too many panels!'. I would have cut out the fifth one but i had no time to fuss at that point.

Another gripe I had with this issue of the book was that when it was printed the two page spread introducing the new world Kanto, Bull Baby and Mish Mash have created for Saint Sinner was split up to make room for a 2page X-man add....arrrgggggg! It would have only taken moving the add one set of pages in either direction to avoid this. PLUS, I had cleared the spread with Marc as well….yet another reason not to trust him in the end.
